New VARD vessel based on Brevik Technology LNG solution

DNV GL has awarded Vard Engineering Brevik AS with an Approval in Principle (AiP) for their new 6,500 m3 bunker vessel design. The design has been evaluated for compliance with the DNV GL Gas Bunker rules, the applicable Gas Carrier rules as well as the IGC Code's 2016 edition.

Deltamarin and Brevik launch a revolutionary multigas carrier design

Deltamarin Ltd and Brevik Technology AS, a VARD affiliate, have joined forces by developing a novel multigas carrier design, G.Delta, which is expected to change the nature of the gas carrying industry. The concept combines in unprecedented way the successful design of Deltamarinís B.Delta and the new-generation patented cylindrical gas tanks by Brevik Technology.

By combining the readily available and proven B.Delta design and separate cylindrical gas containment tanks, a cost-efficient and easy-to-build G.Delta solution is now available to the gas carrier market. The design can be utilised for LNG, LPG, LEG and ethane carriers.

DNV GL gives general approval for VARD's new LNG tank

VARDís new LNG tank design has been granted General Approval for Ship Application (GASA) by DNV GL. The new LNG-type B-tank design is based on vertical cylindrical-shape geometry and has a patented support design.

The tank is the result of a joint industry project (JIP) initiated by VARD and DNV GL in April 2015. Initially, a number of design and documentation challenges were identified, but throughout the project, the two companies were able to collaborate closely to agree on feasible solutions. After numerous iterations, extensive documentation of details and the use of finite element strength calculations to prove the design's capability, DNV GL granted the design a GASA Statement.

The Naval Architect: Paradigm lift

LNG cargo tanks have, up until now, been the domain of either Moss or GTT in the larger sizes with more competition seen in the small to medium sized vessel market. That is about to change with the development of Brevik Technology's new cylindrical tank solution, which the company says will offer the industry an easy to build, competitive alternative.

Competition in the gas carrying market has been limited, particularly in the larger size carriers with owners complaining of the high cost of containment systems partly due to the complexity of the designs and construction and partly due to the lack of effective rivalry.

ABS grants Approval in Principle

ABS, a leading provider of maritime shipping and offshore classification services, has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to a new gas containment system concept designed in Norway by Brevik Technology.

The containment system uses a series of independent, cylindrical IMO Type-B tanks and for the AIP was designed for application in a gas carrier of 30,000 cbm.

In granting the AIP, ABS assessed the concept against the requirements of the International Gas Code, ABS Rules and the ABS Guide for Liquefied Gas Carriers with Independent Tanks. Since the tank design is a novel concept, a HAZID study was also performed.
